TriQuint's New Dual-Channel SMT Optical Modulator Driver Reduces BOM's and Complexity for 40 AND 100 Gb/s Optical Networks

New 100 Gb/s Driver is 1st to Combine Two Channels with Bias-Tees and State of the Art Channel-to-Channel Isolation

Richardson, Texas (USA) and Amsterdam – September 17, 2012 – TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. (NASDAQ: TQNT), a leading RF solutions supplier and technology innovator, has introduced the industry’s first dual-channel, surface-mount optical modulator driver that reduces bills of materials and shrinks PCB areas dedicated to optical driver functions.

The new TGA4947-SL is released in conjunction with the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, September 17-19. TriQuint’s TGA4947-SL is designed for 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s light wave networks using DQPSK and DP-QPSK modulations, respectively. It combines two driver amplifier channels and bias-tees in a compact surface-mount (SMT) package that maintains high channel-to-channel isolation of 30dB from DC to 40 GHz. The excellent isolation provided by TriQuint's solution is essential to reduce bit error rate impact to maintain channel performance.

TriQuint's new modulator driver offers the lowest power dissipation available, making it a 'green' solution that dissipates half the power of competing products (just 1.2W per channel at 6Vpp output.) The TGA4947-SL also enables a more compact optical transmitter design, a key requirement of 100 Gb/s Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) MSA standards. It enables economical surface mount assembly processes and eliminates the need for costly connectorized driver "Bricks" while enabling SMT multiplexer (MUX) modules.

The new TGA4947-SL modulator driver is compatible with TriQuint's Smart Evaluation Board (Smart EVB™) solution for simplified RF connectivity. Smart EVB’s reduce by an order of magnitude the time required to set up and operate these devices in standard RF test and optical test stations.

The new TriQuint TGA4947-SL is designed to drive Mach-Zehnder modulators in optical transceivers and transponders serving metro and long-haul networks. Carriers are rapidly increasing the data rates of these networks to accommodate exponential traffic growth driven by the demand for broadband connectivity. By combining two channels along with accompanying bias-tees in a single surface-mount package, the TGA4947-SL addresses the need to reduce network component costs through lower part counts and maintaining superior electrical characteristics.

TriQuint's new modulator driver provides excellent signal to noise ratio with low additive RMS jitter (less than 0.7ps). It delivers high output of 6Vpp / adjustable up to 9Vpp. The TGA4947-SL offers broad bandwidth (DC-32 GHz) performance, as well as rise and fall times of 10ps, low power dissipation, gain of more than 30dB and single-ended inputs / outputs.

Technical Details:
TGA4947-SL 40 and 100 Gb/s dual-channel, single-ended optical modulator driver; 3 to 9Vpp adjustable output; less than 0.7ps additive RMS jitter; and 10ps rise and fall times.  It offers 30dB channel-to-channel isolation (DC to 40 GHz); 32 GHz 3dB bandwidth; and more than 30dB gain. Power dissipation is 1.2W per channel at 6Vpp output. It is provided in a 16.0 x 10.5 x 3.6mm SMT package; it is RoHS compliant; Smart EVB™ support is included.
